Who got in early and made amazing profits?
When Bitcoin started in 2009, many thought it was a bubble and the digital money would not take off but there are some who have invested in the beginning. These 5 people got in on Bitcoin early and are now worth millions of dollars.
The Winklevoss Twins
Best known to most as the twins who claimed they owned Facebook in the movie The Social Network, the Winklevoss twins moved from social media on to investing in Bitcoin. In 2013, they bought $11 million worth of Bitcoin. This would be worth around 21 times that amount today.
Barry Silbert is an incredibly successful venture capitalist and the founder of The Digital Currency Group. Silbert got in early, buying 48 000 Bitcoins at an auction. Each coin was worth $350 dollars at the time. Now they are worth about 16 times that.
Draper was an early investor in Skype, a technology that we all know and have probably used. This earned him billions of dollars. He bought 30 000 Bitcoins at the same auction that Silbert purchased his coins from. At the time they were worth around $19 million and are now worth up to $171 million. He still has a lot of faith in cryptocurrency, shown by the fact that he is now backing the new cryptocurrency, Tezos.
Shrem got in on the early days of Bitcoin and was part of the The Bitcoin Foundation. Shrem never publicly stated how much Bitcoin he owns but it was rumoured that he bought a few thousand coins when they were cheap, which would now be worth millions.
Bitcoin founder, the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, owns 980,000 Bitcoins, making them one of the richest people in the world. No one knows who is behind the pseudonym but what is certain is that they’re doing incredibly well. It’s no surprise that the person who invented the currency would own a large stake in it, but what they maybe wouldn’t have anticipated is just how popular, and valuable Bitcoin would become.
